Setting is a crucial part of making any piece of writing come alive -- whether you're world-building a fictional setting from scratch, trying to recreate a real place for a work of creative nonfiction, or anywhere in between. Amy Shearn, author of three novels that are firmly rooted in place, will lead a brief craft talk, including examples from both classic literature and contemporary works, along with tips and strategies for making the setting in your work feel alive and fresh. WRITE IT SO THEY FEEL IT, with Brian Gresko

Friday, October 30, 2020

12-1pm ET via Zoom

$15 (free for Resort members!)

Conveying emotion in your writing is tricky business -- get too explicit, readers roll their eyes, go too subtle and they don't feel it. Through a short reading and lecture, we'll explore a sophisticated technique called the objective correlative, which both fiction and nonfiction writers alike will find helpful in evoking emotion and deepening the themes of their work. We'll end with a prompt that will help writers put the technique into practice. There will be time for q&a.
